Armed police were deployed after threats were made over the phone

A man in his 40s has been detained using mental health legislation after a hospital had to go into lockdown following reports of threatening phone calls.

Armed police went to the Royal United Hospital in Bath on 2 February and a man in his 40s was arrested.

A local primary school also went into lockdown as a precaution.

Avon and Somerset Police said the man has now been detained under section 136 of the Mental Health Act.

A separate report was made at the same time of a man carrying a weapon in the area but police were unable to confirm more details.

In an update Avon and Somerset Police said it now knows it was not a weapon but the report was made in "good faith".
