Somerset roads to be inspected by robotic dog
A robotic dog is being used to inspect the roadside of major routes, including the M5 in Somerset.
National Highways has been trialling Spot to capture information in hard-to-reach locations to cut the amount of time its employees are put at risk on the roadside.
It was first put through its paces at a development centre in Moreton-in-Marsh in Gloucestershire last summer.
It will now be used on the M5 as a "safer, cost effective" alternative to using people.
