Burnham-on-Sea community fridge opens for people on low incomes

The fridge will be located at Burnham-On-Sea Methodist Church

A new community facility has been set up for people in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, who are struggling to buy food.

The Waffle Hub Community Cafe will open the community fridge in April, offering fresh food to people on low incomes.

It will be located at Burnham-On-Sea Methodist Church on College Street.

"People can access a big range of foods now," Caroline King, a trustee at the hub, said.

Ms King told BBC Radio Somerset that someone got in touch with the community cafe offering them a fridge.

The cafe took him up on the offer and will now open the fridge just after Easter on a three-month trial, with funding from a local business.

"We are in the same building as the food bank, which can only give non-perishables," Ms King said.

"We can now do the perishable goods, so this completes everything.

"The cost of living has gone through the roof and there are people here like a man in his 80s who told me he doesn't put his heating or hot water on because he's scared of the bills."
