The Zone Youth Club set to reopen after Somerset charity steps in

More than 30 children attended the weekly after-school sessions before the club's closure

A youth club that closed its doors due to a lack of volunteers has been saved by a local Somerset charity.

In Charley's Memory has confirmed it will reopen The Zone Youth Club, in Burnham-on-Sea, with the return of its after-school sessions on Tuesdays.

The youth club was forced to shut on 7 March after nine years of putting on sessions for £1.

The charity's CEO says they want to create a "safe and inclusive space" with "fun-filled activities".

In Charley's Memory was set up after Charley Marks, from Burnham-on-Sea, took his own life aged 18 in 2014.

The charity provides more than 200 children and young people with mental health and wellbeing support.

'Grand relaunch'

More than 30 young people and children used the youth club before its closure.

It is not yet known when the club will reopen, however the charity said there would be a "grand relaunch event" in the coming weeks.

The club says it will resume the Tuesday evening sessions between 15:00 GMT and 17:30 GMT for children between 10 and 16 years old.

Dawn Carey, CEO of In Charley's Memory, said: "We are excited to build upon the incredible work of previous managers Jayne and Brandon, and infuse our expertise into the project.

"Our goal is to create a safe and inclusive space where, amidst the fun-filled activities, young people feel empowered to seek support and navigate life's challenges with the support of both their peers and our experienced staff."

Membership will be set at £1 per week on a "pay as you attend" basis.
