Four Rotherham speed cameras turned off in police trial

Four fixed speed cameras in and around Rotherham are to be turned off as part of a trial by South Yorkshire Police.

The force said a review by its safety camera partnership suggested the cameras were no longer necessary.

The cameras will be bagged and other equipment to monitor drivers' speed will be put in place.

If the trial is successful then the cameras will be permanently removed, with other measures installed to slow down traffic.

The cameras are on Fenton Road, Rotherham, the A633 at Sandygate, Barnsley Road at West Melton and the A631 Bawtry Road, near Hellaby.

South Yorkshire Police said the decision to temporarily turn off the cameras was due to the low number of people killed or seriously injured in collisions at the sites.

Ch Insp Stuart Walne, head of roads policing at South Yorkshire Police, said: "Through this review we have identified sites that no longer meet our requirement criteria.

"Alternative solutions for decommissioned sites may include the use of mobile camera vehicles instead of fixed site cameras and vehicle-activated signs."
