South Yorkshire receives £5m sustainable transport 'boost'

Transport networks in South Yorkshire have received a £5m "boost" from the government.

The funding is for modes of transport aimed at economic growth and reducing the carbon footprint.

Projects such as bus services and walking and cycling routes will be rolled out in the next four years.

Four councils worked with a regional transport group to bid for the money. A bid has also been submitted for a further £32m for larger scale projects.

Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield councils and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive bid for the money from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

Councillor Tim Cheetham, of Barnsley Council, said: "This is a welcome boost for South Yorkshire.

"It will provide funding for a wide range of projects and initiatives to improve sustainable modes of transport across South Yorkshire, which are aimed at boosting economic growth and reducing our carbon impacts.

"There will also be a significant drive to help people change their travel behaviour and take advantage of the more sustainable modes of travel which are available to them."
