London 2012: Sports clubs in Yorkshire get 2012 Olympic legacy cash

Grassroots sports facilities across Yorkshire will receive more than £1.4m as part of an Olympic legacy scheme.

Sports England said 27 community sports groups across the region would share a total of £1,463,139.

The money comes from the national lottery and will be used to improve club buildings and facilities.

In Sheffield, the High Green Development Trust is being awarded £40,164 to replace the roof of its sports hall.

Sport England said the roof leaked every time it rained, leading to sports sessions being cancelled.

'Got better'

Without the investment the sports hall, which is used by the general public, local businesses and sports clubs, was likely to close.

More sporting groups will be able to bid for cash when the scheme's second round of funding opens on 1 February.

Richard Lewis, chairman of Sport England, said: "For hundreds of clubs and tens of thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.

"We've had unprecedented demand for this fund, which has really hit the mark with sports clubs in Yorkshire."
