The University of Sheffield is set to invest £134m in improving engineering teaching facilities.
An £80m teaching block is to be built on the site of the former Jessop Hospital, while £54m will be spent on refurbishing the existing engineering complex off Mappin Street.
The university wants to attract 1,500 more students to engineering courses.
Keith Lilley, its head of estates, said it was good news for "local people and jobs".
