Work on a new indoor market hall for Sheffield will begin in June as part of £20m developments in the city centre, the council has announced.
The £17.5m market will occupy a full block on the corner of The Moor and Earl Street.
It will include a double-height market hall, eight shop units and an open-air service yard.
The 79,000 sq ft (7,300 sq m) market building will house 200 indoor stalls and replace the Castle Markets.
'Central to Sheffield'
The market hall will feature a glass-canopied main entrance on the Moor and be covered by a timber and glass roof. The building will incorporate low energy cooling and waste recycling.
Simon Green, Sheffield City Council's executive director for place, said: "The markets have been central to Sheffield for over 800 years and house one of our largest concentrations of small businesses.
"The new Moor market will give them a tremendous opportunity to reach a wider range of customers."
The council is also to spend £2.6m to complete an upgrade of the public areas of the Upper Moor.
Work on both contracts is due to be completed by the end of 2013.
