Work to start on Sheffield's £2bn road improvement scheme

A £2bn programme of works to improve roads, footpaths and street lighting in Sheffield and maintain them for 25 years is to get under way.
The council said the state of the roads had been the number one issue for residents and businesses for years.
Work will start in Shiregreen and Ewden in September. The rest of the work will take place over a period of time in different city zones.
Contractor Amey is to hold a roadshow in Shiregreen with details of the work.
Trees, pavement resurfacing, kerbs and gullies will also be improved as part of the work.
Councillor Jack Scott, Sheffield City Council's cabinet member for environment, recycling and streetscene, said: "The Streets Ahead improvements works will take five years to complete and we do envisage that there will be some disruption for residents and businesses, which can't be avoided.
"We will reduce this as much as possible through careful planning and lots of communication."
