Journalist Yvonne Ridley has been named as the Respect candidate for the Rotherham by-election.

Ms Ridley will be hoping to succeed former Labour MP Denis MacShane who resigned this month after wrongfully claiming £7,500 in expenses.

In 2001, Ms Ridley was kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan. She later converted to Islam.

The British National Party (BNP) has also announced its candidate, Marlene Guest, for the 29 November election.

Mrs Guest has lived in Rotherham all her life and came fourth in the 2010 General Election for the town.
