Ten candidates in Doncaster's mayoral race

A list of the 10 candidates set to fight to become Doncaster's elected mayor has been officially unveiled.

All three main political parties are represented alongside the English Democrats, Trade Unionist and Socialists, and National Front.

Three independent candidates have put their names forward as well as a 'Save Your Services' representative.

The election, the fourth in Doncaster's history, will take place on 2 May.

Last year people in Doncaster opted to keep an elected mayor, with 62% voting in favour of the system. The turnout was 30.5%.

Doncaster has had a directly-elected mayor since 2002. Peter Davies has held the post since June 2009.

Mr Davies will seek re-election as an independent candidate after parting ways with the English Democrats over claims of an influx of new members joining from the British National Party.

The English Democrats will be represented by David Allen who recently stood for the position of South Yorkshire Police Commissioner.

John Brown, who sought election as MP for Barnsley East in 2010, will represent the Liberal Democrats while Martin Drake won the Conservative party nomination.

The Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts candidate is Mary Jackson, who launched her campaign for mayor at a rally on 2 April attended by general secretary of the RMT transport workers union Bob Crow.

Doncaster Council's Askern Spa ward member Ros Jones will stand for Labour alongside Tony Ward, independent, and Save Doncaster Libraries campaigner Doug Wright, standing under the banner 'Save Your Services'.

Independent candidate Michael Maye and National Front candidate Dave Owen, both of whom stood in 2009, complete the list.
