The Old Town Hall in Sheffield has stood empty since 1996 and has since fallen into disrepair

An historic Sheffield building which campaigners say has been "left to rot" is on the market for £2m.

The Grade II-listed Old Town Hall is listed for sale with the six-figure price tag on the Rightmove website, external.

Preservation group Friends of the Old Town Hall launched a bid earlier this year to save the building on Waingate.

Built in 1808, it has stood empty since 1996. In 2007 it was placed on the Victorian Society's list of most at-risk buildings in the UK.

James Hughes, from the Society, said: '[We have] long been concerned about the state of Sheffield Old Town Hall.

"A sale is potentially good news for the building. However, our final view would depend on the detail of the plans to convert the building to residential."
