A new temporary market will be built in Barnsley to house traders during a revamp of the town centre

Plans to construct a temporary building to house Barnsley Market during a £41m redevelopment of the town centre have been approved.

The 2,600 sq m (28,0000 sq ft) market will be built on the site of the Central Offices in Kendray Street.

It will house 81 stalls and stand for up to four years before being removed to create a market square.

A council report, external described the work as a "critical part of delivering the Barnsley Markets Projects vision".

A date to begin construction of the temporary market will be announced following the demolition of Central Offices, which is due to start in November.

The council said it was unable to say at this stage how much the temporary market would cost to build.

The wider town centre redevelopment was announced in January 2014.

Barnsley Council took over responsibility for project after failing to attract a private developer.
