Two officers and two members of the public were injured in collisions with stolen cars in Sheffield, police said.

Officers were called to a report of a collision involving a black BMW and a Vauxhall Corsa on Penistone Road, at about 21:45 BST on Wednesday.

Several men in the BMW - thought to be stolen - then fled on foot, with one stealing a Ford S-MAX, and driving it the wrong way down the road.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery.

Shortly afterwards, police said the man in the S-MAX - armed with a suspected firearm - left the vehicle and stole a silver VW Tiguan from another member of the public, and drove towards Bradfield Road.

"A special constable, who came across the incident, was hit by the Tiguan, while another suffered superficial injuries," a police spokesperson said.

"The first officer remains in hospital at this time with thankfully minor injuries," they said.

Two women in the Corsa were also taken to hospital where they received treatment for minor injuries, but were later discharged, the force added.

Det Ch Insp Andy Knowles said: "Last night affected a number of people in the city centre and has no doubt caused some real concern in the community.

"I would like to reassure the public that we're doing all we can to find those responsible and work out the sequence of events that may have led up to the incidents on Penistone Road.

"Members of the public in three different cars were left both injured and shaken and one of our special constables is currently in hospital with injuries which are thankfully not too serious."

The force said a 26-year-old man arrested on suspicion of burglary, robbery and attempted murder remained in custody.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage from around 21.45 BST is asked to contact police.
