Thousands of Sheffield United supporters have gathered to celebrate as part of the club's promotion parade.

The Blades sealed automatic promotion back to the Premier League last month after two years in the Championship.

An open-top bus has made its way through the city's streets ahead of a reception at the town hall.

The parade left the club's Bramall Lane ground at 17:30 BST, with fans lining the route through the city centre and gathering outside the town hall.

Goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, speaking before the parade, said promotion "hadn't really sunk in yet".

"We have a big challenge ahead of us and we know exactly what to expect so we are looking forward to it, there's a lot of hard work to be done," he said.

The players and staff enjoyed a drinks reception at the town hall after the bus tour.

Kate Josephs, Sheffield City Council chief executive, said: "It's hugely important, we are so proud of the Blades.

"We will have everybody all around the world watching the Premier League and seeing how amazing the city of Sheffield is."

Analysis

Sheffield United's achievements this season shouldn't be underestimated, amid a backdrop of takeover uncertainty, a transfer embargo and issues with the training ground.

Finishing second comfortably, in the end, with a club-record points tally in the second tier - all while qualifying for the FA Cup semi-finals, only losing to Manchester City - should put Paul Heckingbottom in the running for manager of the year.

However, there are big challenges coming this summer. United have several players coming to the end of their contracts.

They also need to make sure they keep hold of their best players. Interest in Iliman Ndiaye is significant, with a belief his representatives are keen to capitalise on a blossoming career and a recent World Cup cameo.

Sander Berge is regularly linked with a move to the continent, while loanees James McAtee and Tommy Doyle are due back at Manchester City.
