The crash on the M1 near Barnsley initially caused a full closure of the busy motorway on Thursday morning

A busy motorway was closed for about eight hours after a lorry crashed into the central reservation.

Two cars and the LGV collided on the M1 in South Yorkshire just before 03:00 BST on Thursday morning, National Highways said.

The northbound side was shut from junction 37 at Dodworth to junction 38 at Haigh.

Two lanes on the carriageway reopened just before 11:00 BST, but a third lane remains closed for barrier repairs.

In an update following the reopening the agency said repairs were under way with "traffic flowing well past the scene at this time".

A closure on the southbound side was lifted at about 08:40 BST.
