Armed police were called in after a paramedic discovered a loaded gun and ammunition stuffed into a man's sock as he lay drunk and injured in the street.

Kieran Kenny was found covered in blood in East Lane, Stainforth, in September 2022, South Yorkshire Police said.

The force said he was about to be taken to hospital when the gun was located.

When officers later searched Kenny's home in Clifton Court, Thorne, they found more than 40 weapons, including several machetes and swords.

Kenny, 39, was jailed at Sheffield Crown Court on 13 October for five years after he admitted two firearms offences.

A police spokesperson said that when Kenny was discovered he "appeared to be intoxicated to the point that he had fallen over and injured his face".

Speaking after the hearing Det Con Haider Ali, said: "Kenny had a collection of illegal weapons in his home and for him to be possessing a gun while he was so intoxicated is incredibly dangerous.

"It posed a considerable threat to those who were around him at the time and also to those that were potentially going to be affected, as the reason behind why he armed himself on that night still remains unknown.

"We take firearms offences incredibly seriously and we are glad we've been able to remove some dangerous weapons that Kenny was illegally keeping in his home, including a gun and ammunition."
