A Barnsley woman has said she was shocked after finding fruit spiked with razor blades on her morning walk.

Pippa Downing found the fruit stuffed with meat and olives near her home on Merrill Road, Thurnscoe, on Sunday.

Mrs Downing said: "It looked to have had eyes etched into it and the blades appeared to be from disposable razors."

South Yorkshire Police said the incident had not been reported but advised owners concerned about their pet's health to contact their vet.

Mrs Downing said: "It was filled with strong-smelling foods which I can only assume was to attract dogs.

"At best, they would have obviously cut their mouths, but could have been fatal if swallowed."

Mrs Downing believes the incident could have been related to Halloween but added that she doubted "any unsuspecting dog or their heartbroken owner would find it funny".

She said: "I have two Frenchies who are so greedy, they would definitely have just picked it up given the chance.

"I highly doubt it was a personal thing aimed at my dogs - well I hope not! Just a nasty and calculated prank from a sad individual."

Mrs Downing warned: "Be vigilant, teach your dogs the drop command and make sure you have decent control on walks."
