Rotherham annual bonfire event cancelled due to 'soggy' ground

A council-run bonfire event has been cancelled over safety concerns.
The annual Clifton Park celebrations in Rotherham were due to be held on 4 November.
However, Rotherham Council said the event could no longer go ahead after heavy rain had left the ground "very muddy and slippery".
The "soggy" conditions at the park meant it was not safe for people to gather in large numbers, a spokesperson added.
Polly Hamilton, Rotherham Council's assistant direct of culture, sport, and tourism, said: "Residents' safety is our number one priority.
"The rain from last weekend and further rain this week has made the grassy areas very muddy and slippery and so for safety reasons, sadly, we have had to cancel this celebration event.
"We cannot take risks, especially with an event such as this which will be held when it is dark," she added.
Meanwhile, local fire service chiefs have urged people to attend organised displays.
"If you do choose to have a display at home, please make sure you follow the firework code," a spokesperson for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said.
Group manager Ade Parkin added: "It's a fact that many accidents are caused by improper use of fireworks and by carelessness.
"We want everyone to be able to celebrate safely and have a fun night," he told the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
