Investigations are continuing after a car hit a crowd of people outside a property in Sheffield, police said

Local residents have described the scene of "disaster" which unfolded in their street as a car hit a crowd of people outside a property in Sheffield.

Emergency services were called to College Close, Burngreave, shortly after 14:00 GMT on Wednesday, following reports of violence and disorder.

As that call was being made, a car hit a group of people, police said.

A 46-year-old man died at the scene and a 23-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of murder, officers added.

Another man, aged 55, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and both arrested men remained in custody, according to South Yorkshire Police.

The next of kin of the man who died had been informed, a force spokesperson said.

"Numerous" people were also injured in the incident, with one of them in a serious condition and being treated in hospital, they added.

Senior investigating officer Det Ch Insp Andrew Knowles said: "We are now dealing with a murder investigation and we understand the distress this will cause to those directly affected and the wider community."

The scene in the aftermath of the incident was described by one eyewitness as a "disaster"

Eyewitness Tarek Nayli, 49, said when he came out of his house on Wednesday afternoon, he saw fighting in the street and a number of injured people.

Neighbours told him there were other people trapped under a car.

"I heard a lot of sound, a lot of voices, a lot of shouting," he said.

"When I came out, I found people all gathering around and people fighting.

"One guy had a lot of blood on his face."

"When the police came, they flipped the car over and they've taken two people out," Mr Nayli said.

One injured man was already sitting beside the car and a woman was also clearly hurt, he added.

Video taken at the scene appeared to show two people being treated by paramedics and a car on its side in a front garden.

Mr Nayli told the BBC he only found out later that someone had died.

"It was very, very sad and also very upsetting and I couldn't believe it," he said.

"All of a sudden, you find people dead. This is a disaster."

Other neighbours said the fighting had begun over a dispute between families, but the man who died had come to help and was not involved in the disorder.

On Thursday, an extensive police cordon remained in place around the close, which is about a 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from Sheffield city centre.

The cordon was later lifted as forensic officers and detectives continued their inquiries at a small semi-detached property.

Police appealed for anyone with information, or who had doorbell or dashcam footage, to get in touch.

Forensic teams have been seen at the scene all day as investigations continued on Thursday

It's a quiet cul-de-sac where the horror unfolded on Wednesday.

People are going about their business and parcel vans are coming and going, but so do the police cars and forensic teams.

All the focus is on one house where the car crashed.

Forensic teams in their white suits can be seen going back and forth to their van.

It's calm now, but it's a distressing scene that neighbours will never forget.
