A new GP hub set to be built in Sheffield will now not go ahead after one of the surgeries involved withdrew.

Upwell Street Surgery had been due to move to the new hub on Rushby Street, Fir Vale, along with Page Hall Surgery.

NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board said the surgery withdrew after deciding it would not work.

A city centre hub is still set to go ahead on Church Street, replacing two Primary Care Sheffield practices.

The plan for the Rushby Street hub is the second to be halted.

Earlier this year, it was decided not to relocate Firth Park Surgery and Shiregreen Medical Centre to a proposed health centre at Concord Leisure Centre after the majority of patients rejected the plan, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

The proposals formed part of a £37m rebuilding programme which the integrated health board previously called a "once in a generation opportunity to improve healthcare for people in Sheffield".

Burngreave Surgery and Sheffield Medical Centre are still set to move to a new location on Spital Street, Burngreave.

Health Care Surgery, Buchanan Road Surgery and Margetson Surgery will go to a new centre on Wordsworth Avenue, Parson Cross.

Mike Speakman, programme manager for the NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, told a meeting the Upwell Street Surgery had weighed up the pros and cons and decided the plan would not work.

Mr Speakman said the board would be holding talks with Page Hall Surgery to look at the implications of the decision.

Work on the city centre hub is due to start in August 2024 and end by March 2025, he added.
