Power cut hits Rugeley Power Station area
- Published
An electrical failure in part of Staffordshire caused safety triggers to kick in at Rugeley Power Station.
Fire crews were called to the power station at about 20:30 BST after reports of an explosion but found it was just a safety device starting.
The fire service said the power station's large chimney was "purged" for about an hour and "large volumes of smoke" were likely.
National Grid said the power cut lasted about eight minutes.
It said it was caused by a fault at a substation, which led to thousands of homes and some rail services in the area to be affected.
Power has now been fully restored.
