Plans have been unveiled for a new student village in Stoke-on-Trent.

Staffordshire University said it planned to replace existing student accommodation on its main Leek Road campus, turning it into accessible parkland.

More than 700 student rooms could be built on the opposite side of the River Trent instead.

Work could begin in 2024 and be completed in 2026, if plans were approved, said the university.

A village hub is proposed as part of the multi-million pound scheme, which would include an events and wellbeing space.

The existing Clarice Cliff Court accommodation would also be refurbished.

The new development would be linked to the wider Leek Road campus by a pedestrian bridge and boardwalk.

There are also plans for a new car parking area on the former Squires View site nearby.

"We are very excited to submit these plans to Stoke-on-Trent City Council later this month," said vice-chancellor Prof Martin Jones.

"The proposed Staffordshire University Student Village is an exciting opportunity to create a vibrant student community offering new ways of living and studying on campus by blending contemporary sustainable architecture with high quality facilities."
