Part of the M6 motorway was closed for several hours causing major delays after diesel and oil spilled from a crash involving three lorries.

The northbound carriageway between junction 13, for Penkridge, and junction 14, for Stafford, shut at about 01:20 BST on Thursday.

One of the lorry drivers suffered potentially serious injuries in the crash, the ambulance service said.

The carriageway did not reopen until about 15:00 BST.

All of the lorries involved suffered "significant damage" in the crash, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said.

A second man was treated for minor injuries while the third driver did not want to be checked by medics.

The northbound carriageway will be closed between junction 13 and 14 from 21:00 BST for repairs to take place.

All four lanes of the motorway need to be resurfaced given the severity of the spillage, National Highways said.

Duty operations manager Melanie Beaumont said: "We'd like to thank motorists for their patience while we dealt with this incident this morning.

"The work at the scene of the incident was complex and the good news for drivers is that the road is back open for the evening commute."
