Minaal Salam died after she was hit by a car outside her school

Work is due to start on new road safety measures outside a primary school following the death of a child.

Minaal Salam was hit by a car in April 2022 outside Newstead Primary Academy in Blurton, Staffordshire.

A man was later found guilty of driving without insurance, but faced no further legal action as the collision was ruled unavoidable.

The new measures include extra waiting restrictions and alterations to the existing speed humps.

The work is due to start on Monday and take a week to complete, with construction workers on the site between 08:00 and 16:00.

Following the fatal crash, a coroner called on Stoke-on-Trent Council to improve road safety around the school.

Emma Serrano told the inquest: "I have a concern that, if the traffic measures are not looked at, there is a risk of future deaths."

The council said the proposals were intended to remove the "inconsiderate parking" around the school.

Amjid Wazir, the councillor responsible for environment and enforcement, said: "All ward councillors agreed with the proposed changes, and rightly so.

"The new measures are being implemented to ensure an incident of this scale doesn't happen again."
