Oscar-winner Rachel Shenton recognised by Staffordshire University

An Oscar winner is among five people being awarded an honorary degree by Staffordshire University.

Actress and producer Rachel Shenton was recognised for her positive contribution to the county and beyond, the university said.

She got an Academy award in 2018 for The Silent Child, a short film which dealt with issues surrounding deafness.

Ms Shenton will become an Honorary Doctor of Arts at the university's Autumn Awards.

Also receiving honorary degrees:

  • Noreen Oliver MBE, founder of Recovery Group UK, which runs addiction rehabilitation programmes

  • Col Tim Sandiford OBE, former commanding officer of the Staffordshire Regiment

  • Staffordshire University alumni Zulkifl Ahmed who received an MBE for services to education and young people.

  • Venture capitalist John Moulton from Stoke-on-Trent.

The honorary degrees will be presented during the university's graduation ceremonies at King's Hall in Stoke on 13 and 14 November.
