Richard Allen died in a crash on 23 December

A drunk motorist drove at more than 110mph and took part in a video call just before causing a fatal crash, police said.

Richard Allen was due to get married just days after his Ford Fiesta was hit by a VW Passat near Lichfield on 23 December 2022.

Marius Mihai, the driver of the Passat, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

He was jailed for more than nine years and eight months.

Staffordshire Police said CCTV footage revealed Mihai was driving at more than 40mph over the national speed limit before the collision happened at the Wall Island roundabout.

The force said the 33-year-old, from Walsall, was also under the influence of alcohol and engaged in a video WhatsApp call at the moment of the crash.

Mihai was also banned from driving for more than 11 years.

PC Matt Brailsford said: "Mihai drove at a dangerous speed whilst intoxicated and whilst using his mobile phone.

"His actions have devastated the family of Richard and our thoughts are still very much with them as they continue to come to terms with their tragic loss."

Mr Allen's family previously paid tribute to him and said he "brightened up the lives of so many people".
