MP and former Cabinet minister Karen Bradley said she felt "incredibly humbled" to have been made a dame in the Political Honours.

Ms Bradley, Conservative MP for Staffordshire Moorlands since 2010, said Prime Minister Rishi Sunak phoned to give her the news a few days ago.

Number 10 said she received the honour for public and political service.

Ms Bradley believed the honour was partly in recognition of her continuing work in tackling modern slavery.

Her roles have included modern slavery minister; culture secretary and Northern Ireland secretary.

"The reaction from everybody has been so humbling, really - just so joyful," she said.

"And my phone has not stopped beeping, I don't quite know if I will ever get round to replying to all the text messages to say thank you."

People she had not seen in a long time because of "how life is" had sent messages, she said, adding: "It's a really wonderful thing".

Although the announcement coincides with the New Year Honours list and political appointments are also formally approved by King Charles, they are conferred separately.

Outside of politics, Ms Bradley is a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser, and is married with two sons.
