Thirty small and 30 large sculptures will be created for the art trail

An elephant-themed art trail made up of 60 sculptures is to be installed, with contributing designers from across the West Midlands..

The elephants, large and small, will go on show in parks, streets and open spaces in Lichfield, Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield during the summer.

The sculptures will then raise funds for St Giles Hospice when they are auctioned off in September.

They will be designed by local and national artists, the hospice said.

A gold-themed elephant, signed by Spandau Ballet singer Tony Hadley, will be among those being sold off by Richard Winterton Auctioneers as part of the March of the Elephants project.

The hospice said it spends about £10m a year providing its specialist services and has sites in Lichfield and Sutton Coldfield. It receives 25% of its funding from the government and then relies on donations and income generated from the community.

Emma Yates, associate director of income generation, said the project was a "fantastic opportunity" for the community to get outdoors and explore the area.

"We're confident March of the Elephants will help to increase footfall for local businesses and boost the regional economy - whilst bringing with it fun and adventure for families and friends to enjoy together."

Auctioneer Mr Winterton said he was delighted to be involved.

"St Giles Hospice is a cause which has long been close to our hearts for so many reasons.

"It's wonderful to be able to help celebrate that by partnering with St Giles Hospice to be official auctioneers for this incredible project."
