Bomb disposal team detonates mine on Southwold beach

A World War II mine found at a Suffolk beach has been safely detonated.

A swimmer found the spherical explosive device, which coastguards said was 12in (30cm) across, on Tuesday evening on Southwold beach.

A Royal Navy team of bomb disposal experts went to the site and detonated the mine shortly after 1800 BST.

A small area of the beach had been cordoned off while the team examined the mine. The device is thought be have been British made.
