An 18m high wind turbine training facility has been opened as part of £1.3m improvements at Lowestoft College in Suffolk.

The college said the turbine and engineering workshop would make it a "one stop training centre for the offshore sector".

The wind turbine tower includes a helicopter hoist and transfer ladder and will eventually have its own blade.

Improvements were also made to the learning resource centre and canteen.

Principal Simon Summers said: "We can continue to provide the training needed for the fast growing energy industry."

Funding for the project came from University Campus Suffolk, the Local Strategic Partnership, the Skills Funding Agency and the college.

Energy efficient lighting and boilers have also been installed to reduce costs.
