Diamond Jubilee: More than 60 beacons lit in Suffolk

Beacons were lit between 22:00 and 22:30 BST on Monday

More than 60 beacons have been lit around Suffolk to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Town councils, businesses, communities and churches lit the torches between 22:00 and 22:30 BST.

In Ipswich, a volunteer from the town's winter night shelter was given the honour of lighting a beacon at Christchurch Park.

Paul Herbert said he was "gobsmacked" to have received the recognition for his work for homeless people.

A firework display followed the lighting of the beacon.

'Alternative Jubilee'

In Woodbridge, a beacon was lit at Kingston playing field.

There was also fireworks display by the riverside and an alternative Jubilee party at the Tea Hut.

Mark Moore, of S Express, joined Ben Osborne and other DJs for the Jubilee Curiosity Disco, which is also marking 175 years since Queen Victoria inherited the throne in 1837.

Philip Hope-Cobbold invited people to his Glemham Hall estate, in Little Glemham, for the lighting of a beacon.

"The beacon is about 80ft up on the roof of the house, looking out towards the A12", he said.

Beacons were lit in other locations around the county including at Beck Row, Bacton, Hartest, Stoke by Nayland, Kettleburgh and Brandon.

In Pakefield, a candlelit service ook place on the cliff top near the Trowel and Hammer pub, before the lighting of the beacon at 22:15 BST.

A brass band accompanied the lighting of a beacon at the cliff top car park in Felixstowe.
