Gritting teams in Suffolk are gearing up for heavy snow on Sunday afternoon which the Met Office said could be 4ins (10cm) deep.

The worst of Friday's bad weather was avoided and only a slight dusting of snow arrived.

Matthew Riches, in charge of county gritting operations, said the forecasters may have got it wrong but this was a welcome relief for them.

He added that they had set out a "robust plan" to deal with the weather.

"I've been really pleased with the performance of our gritting teams - we've been working round the clock since Sunday," Mr Riches said.

"I'm also grateful that the snowfall was less than forecast leaving us to deal with what is expected on Sunday.

"We had a robust plan to deal with an event that in fact did not turn out quite so bad as we thought it might.

"We get through salt at a colossal rate but we've got replacement on order so we're not that concerned."

Greater Anglia trains will run its planned service on all routes over the weekend.

However, scheduled engineering works will be taking place on some routes and customers are strongly advised to check their planned journey before setting out.

Full details of engineering work can be found on the train company's website.

A Suffolk police spokesman said: "Driving conditions are slightly treacherous but there have not been any major problems on the roads."
