Lowestoft railway station's £1m interchange work

The £1m will be spent redesigning the area for buses, taxis and cars outside the station

Work has begun on a £1m scheme to improve Lowestoft's railway station.

Suffolk County Council, which has also described the station as being in an "unacceptable condition", is providing the funding.

The project will redesign the area outside the station.

Guy McGregor, councillor for transport, said: "The changes will reduce traffic congestion by making walking, cycling and bus travel more attractive."

The county council, which has also described the existing railway station as being in an "unacceptable condition", is working with Waveney District Council and Greater Anglia, which has the franchise to run trains until 2014.

Councillor Colin Law, leader of Waveney District Council, said: "We're aiming for this to become a hub for integrated, sustainable transport and a natural link between train and bus.

"Our long-term objective is to make the station building more attractive and welcoming."

The county council said once the current work is complete, they will look at improving facilities inside the train station.
