John Jackson was serving an indeterminate sentence for robbery and burglary, the force said.

A convicted burglar is on the run after allegedly stealing money from a charity shop while being left alone with keys during a work placement.

Police said John Jackson was dropped off for the placement on Felixstowe Road, Ipswich, at 08:40 BST.

He collected the keys, but later another staff member arrived and found Jackson and some money were missing.

Jackson, 48, was serving an indeterminate sentence at Hollesley Bay open prison.

He was convicted of aggravated burglary, home burglary and robbery.

Police said Jackson should not be approached and are asking people who might have seen him to call them.

He has contacts in the Bedford and Tebworth area of Bedfordshire and it is thought he could have headed back there.

He is described as white, 5ft 8in tall, of medium build and with hazel eyes and grey hair.

Jackson also has an Essex accent and a tattoo on his right arm saying "Mum".
