A woman in her 40s died in one of two multi-vehicle crashes that closed the A12 near Ipswich, police said.

Mandy Snowling, 43, from Ipswich, died when the Mazda she was driving was involved in a collision involving four cars and two lorries on the northbound carriageway at Copdock at 12:40 BST on Friday.

A second three-vehicle crash happened on the southbound carriageway at 14:15.

Suffolk Police said the road remained closed until just after midnight.

The first crash involved the red Mazda 6, a black Vauxhall Zafira, a black Toyota Hilux, a blue BMW 320 and two Volvo HGV lorries.

A police spokeswoman said Ms Snowling died at the scene.

She said a man and woman, who had been travelling in the Vauxhall, had minor injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment, but were later discharged.

Police said there were no reports of any serious injuries in the second crash, which happened directly opposite the scene of the first.
