A large-scale search for two people last seen on the Orwell Bridge has been called off.

Suffolk Police was called to the A14 bridge over the River Orwell at Ipswich just before 22:30 BST on Tuesday but did not find anyone when they arrived.

An "extensive" search of the bridge and surrounding area continued on Wednesday morning, but all agencies and police have been stood down, the force said.

Officers were continuing inquiries to check the two people were safe.

"But all inquiries so far have proved unsuccessful," police added.

The bridge is about 43m (140ft) above the water at its apex.

A spokeswoman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said coastguard helicopters from Lydd and Lee-on-Solent, coastguard rescue teams from Aldeburgh, Holbrook, Shingle Street and Felixstowe, and two RNLI lifeboats from Harwich were drafted in to help with the search operation.
