Builders are to start work on a £4.9m revamp of a coastal town's seafront after planners approved a two-storey building with cafe/restaurant, showers and changing facilities.

East Suffolk Council has given consent to the project at Jubilee Parade, Lowestoft.

The council said government Levelling Up funding of £4.3m allowed the extensive improvements.

Work on the project is due to begin next month.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said, in the March budget, that 16 regeneration projects would get a share of £200m, external.

The council said the new complex would also have uninterrupted sea views, five concession units and toilets.

Some beach huts would be moved, existing structures demolished, and the promenade extended onto the beach, the council said.

'Extensive improvements'

The council was putting in the extra £600,000 for the project.

"Following extensive consultation with residents and businesses, we are pleased to see the Jubilee Parade cafe complex progress to the next phase of delivery," said Toby Hammond, council cabinet member for economic development and transport.

"Unfortunately, the existing structure is tired and unable to support modern facilities, however the government's Levelling Up funding will enable us to extensively improve the offer at this location, attracting more people to this part of the seafront.

"We are keen to improve seafront access for everyone and the new development will have an accessible lift, showers, and changing places facility which will enable even more people to enjoy visiting this area."

The council said the first stage of construction was expected to be completed by May.

A second stage, the construction of the main building, would begin in June and was expected to be completed by spring 2025.

The council said redevelopment of Jubilee Parade was one of a number of regeneration projects outlined in the Lowestoft "town investment plan".
