Bus services change across Surrey

Bus timetables showing changes to services across five areas of Surrey have been published by the county council following a review.

The council said the changes would be brought in later this month and were already available to view online.

Services have been increased where demand is strong and reduced where demand has fallen, councillor Ian Lake, cabinet transport spokesman, said.

The changes have saved the council £1.7m a year in subsidy costs, it said.

Elmbridge, Spelthorne, Runnymede, Woking, and Reigate and Banstead are all affected areas.

'Value for money'

Five extra Sunday services have been introduced for six months on a trial basis.

Mr Lake said: "Surrey's bus services became a hotch potch of different routes over the years so the review was an opportunity to go back to the drawing board and make sure the needs of passengers are met while providing value for money."

He added: "We had to take action because the subsidy costs were soaring by millions of pounds and weren't providing taxpayers with value for money."

Bus users and companies were consulted, he said.

He urged people to use the new Sunday services during the trial period.

New timetables are being displayed at bus stops and are also on the county council's website.
