Council seeks grant for Desborough Island improvements

A council and local community groups have applied for a £100,000 grant to improve a riverside area in Surrey.
The Veolia Environmental Trust will decide later this month whether to award the money to restore and conserve Desborough Island, in Weybridge.
Elmbridge Borough Council said a riverside nature trail would be created along with improved public facilities.
Desborough Island was created in the 1930s to alleviate flooding on the River Thames.
The island, which is accessed by two bridges, supports a thriving wildlife population, and is also a popular beauty spot for dog walkers, anglers and nature lovers.
The council said in recent years parts of the island had been blighted by anti-social behaviour.
Chief Executive Rob Moran said: "The grant would enable the council and the community to restore this natural beauty spot, creating a safe environment for visitors to enjoy and giving the local community an island to be proud of.
"We're all keeping our fingers crossed."
