Surrey police stations: Seven more could be sold to cut costs

Seven more police stations in Surrey could be put up for sale as part of cost cutting measures.

Surrey Police have recommended the marketing of East Molsey, Walton, Cranleigh, Dorking and Chertsey, alongside already approved Epsom and Esher stations.

The final decision will be made by Surrey Police Authority at a meeting on 8 September.

Offers have been made on six stations put on the market in April and May.

Police have stressed that no police station would be sold until a suitable alternative location has been identified

'Little-used'

It is hoped officers will be co-located in other public authority buildings, including council offices.

A spokeswoman for Surrey Police said a review in 2010 identified many older buildings as "out-of-date, costly to run and often little-used by members of the public".

It is believed the cost cutting will help to ensure an extra 200 frontline police officers in Surrey.

Sales contracts have been drawn up after offers were made for Ripley, Sunbury, Frimley, Ash, Lingfield and Byfleet police stations, which were put on the market in spring.
