Solar power for Surrey council buildings

Solar panels are to be installed on 25 council-owned buildings across Surrey.

The Conservative-controlled local authority claimed the project would save more than £2m in electricity bills over the next 25 years.

The move would also reduce the county's carbon emissions by almost 140 tonnes a year, the authority said.

The buildings under consideration for the panels include Chertsey and Oxted libraries and Camberley and Dorking fire stations.

Councillor Tim Hall, the cabinet member for change and efficiency, said the council was leading by example.

The panels are expected to be installed by March 2012.
