One person remains unaccounted for after a fire at a block of retirement flats in Surrey which led to the evacuation of the building.

About 40 residents of Gibson Court, off Manor Road North, Hinchley Wood, were moved out as fire crews tackled the blaze, which began just after midnight.

Manor Road North was closed while firefighters remained at the scene.

Elmbridge Borough Council said temporary accommodation had been found for all the residents.

About 26 were initially taken by bus to Claygate Centre for the Community.

'Lost everything'

"These people arrived at Claygate standing barefoot in their pyjamas," said chief executive Robert Moran.

"They have lost everything and there has been a massive effort to rally round for them.

"They were very, very confused in some cases and very emotional and upset.

"It is very disorientating for all concerned."

He said the council was working with Elmbridge Housing Trust and Peverel Retirement, which owned the flats, to find permanent accommodation for residents.
