Staff cuts at Surrey's libraries will not be reviewed

Plans to replace paid staff with volunteers at some of Surrey's libraries will not be reviewed by senior councillors.

On Tuesday members of Surrey County Council's communities select committee voted against referring the plans back to the cabinet following a call-in.

The plans have proved controversial with several protests being held.

The Conservative-led council maintains the staff cuts are necessary to keep the county's 52 libraries open.

The council said the libraries that would be run by volunteers were Bagshot, Bramley, Byfleet, Ewell Court, Lingfield, New Haw, Stoneleigh, Tattenhams, Virginia Water, and Warlingham.

They will operate as a pilot in financial year 2012-13 so their success can be assessed.
