Guildford's 'dilapidated' bus station set to change

Plans to build a new bus station in Guildford have come a step closer after councillors concluded the current one was "dilapidated".

The future of the current station, behind the Friary Shopping Centre, was discussed at a meeting on Thursday.

The plans by Guildford Borough Council are in the early stages and are estimated to cost £7m.

Council leader Tony Rooth said he had reached the conclusion a new station needed to be built.

"Residents have indicated that it is dilapidated and needs some serious work done to it and quite a lot of money spent," he said.

"So what we're looking for is a new bus centre and we've commissioned experts to come in and advise us about possible stations."

He added that a site on Bedford Road, next to the cinema, had been earmarked.

In 2010, £75,000 was spent on improvements to the the bus station, including repairs and repainting.
