London 2012 Olympics: Surrey road banners to be prizes

Hundreds of flags, banners and bunting used to line roads in Surrey for the London 2012 cycling road races and time trials are to be given away as prizes.

Surrey County Council is asking competitors to write 100 words about why they should win the memorabilia.

Bradley Wiggins won gold in the men's time trial event which passed through Elmbridge and several Surrey towns before ending at Hampton Court.

The banners, flags and bunting lined the route.

The cycle road race on the opening weekend of the Olympics in July took cyclists from the Mall, through west London to Surrey and back again, and included a 9.6 mile (15.5km) circuit around Box Hill.

'Games history'

Lizzie Armitstead won Britain's first medal of the 2012 Olympics, taking silver in the women's road race on day two.

Helyn Clack, the council's cabinet member who had responsibility for the Olympics, will judge entries for the online competition, which ends on 11 January.

"We made Surrey an Olympic arena for three amazing days of sport and now people have the chance to own their own piece of Games history," she said.

"I'm sure there are plenty of sports clubs, community groups and residents keen to give these reminders of a glorious Games a home."
