New fire stations in Surrey given go-ahead by council

Plans for two new fire stations in Surrey and the downgrading of two others have been approved.

Surrey County Council's cabinet voted to open stations in Salfords and Burgh Heath.

However, both Epsom and Reigate will lose one of their two fire engines as part of plans for a new chain of single engine fire stations.

Residents have voiced concerns over the ability of the fire service to deal with a major incident.

Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Jan Mason, from the Residents Association of Epsom and Ewell, said: "There's a great fear that should a large scale fire take place, Surrey Fire and Rescue would not be in a position to deal with it safely and effectively."

However, Kay Hammond, who is the council's cabinet member for community safety, said: "The proposal will enable a different area to get a better response.

"Surrey Fire and Rescue is for the benefit of the whole of the county and it is really important we have that balanced response."
