Surrey County Council helps pothole bump app development

An app which detects bumps in the road has been trialled by Surrey County Council to see if it can help identify potholes faster.

The Street Bump app, which has been pioneered by the Mayor's Office, in Boston, USA, collects data from motorists when their car hits a bump.

If a number of people hit a bump in the same place a pothole is registered.

The council said it had tested the app for six months, with the data being fed back to Boston to aid its development.

Richard Bolton, who is the council's local highway services street manager, said: "We'll remain in contact with the City of Boston and keep a close eye on how Street Bump develops to see if it could benefit Surrey in the future."

The council said Surrey's data was helping the app's developers create a system which distinguished between potholes and other bumps in the road, such as manhole covers.
