Extended Frimley Park A&E sees 'smooth' new year

A Surrey hospital has said it treated more A&E patients on New Year's Eve than the previous year.

Frimley Park said it treated 114 people between 18:00 GMT on 31 December and 06:00 GMT on 1 January within four hours.

Last year, 104 patients attended the department over the same period

A £22m extension to the emergency department at the hospital, near Camberley, opened in July.

Helen Coe, director of operations, said the 12-hour period went smoothly.

She added the hospital had not had to deal with a high number of alcohol-related issues.

"We now have more staff on the front line and have increased our bed capacity to better match activity," she said.

South East Coast Ambulance Service, which covers Kent, Surrey and Sussex, said it received 1,160 emergency calls between 22:00 GMT and 04:00 GMT.

A spokesman said that more than half the calls were alcohol-related.

More than 800 staff were out responding to incidents across the three counties, he added.
